Altera was an American pioneer in the field of programmable logic devices (PLDs), which are integrated circuits that can be programmed after they are manufactured. The company was founded in 1983 and was headquartered in San Jose, California. Altera was a major competitor to Xilinx, another PLD manufacturer. Intel acquired Altera in 2015 for $16.7 billion.
