BB&T, short for Branch Banking and Trust Company, was an American multinational financial services corporation headquartered in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. It was the sixth-largest bank in the United States based on assets. In 2019, BB&T and SunTrust merged to form Truist Financial Corporation, the sixth-largest bank in the United States. Truist still uses the BB&T name for its banking operations in certain regions. BB&T was founded in 1872 as a community bank in Wilson, North Carolina. The bank grew rapidly over the next century, expanding through acquisitions and organic growth. In 1998, BB&T merged with First Union National Bank, becoming the sixth-largest bank in the United States at the time. BB&T continued to expand in the years that followed, acquiring banks in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.
