The Edmonton Oilers are a professional ice hockey team based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. They compete in the National Hockey League (NHL) as a member club of the Pacific Division in the Western Conference. Founded in 1972 as one of the original franchises in the World Hockey Association (WHA), the Oilers joined the NHL in 1979 following the merger between the two leagues. The team has won five Stanley Cup championships, tying them with the Montreal Canadiens for third in NHL history. The Oilers' home arena is Rogers Place, which opened in 2016.
