The government of El Salvador is a unitary presidential republic, with the president as the head of state and government. The president is elected by popular vote for a five-year term and can be re-elected once. The government is divided into three branches: the executive branch, headed by the president; the legislative branch, consisting of the unicameral Legislative Assembly; and the judicial branch, headed by the Supreme Court of Justice. The government is responsible for formulating and implementing national policies, providing essential services to citizens, and ensuring the rule of law.
