A group of genes that are involved in the regulation of stem cell development and germ cell differentiation. These genes were first identified in Drosophila melanogaster, the fruit fly, and have since been found in a wide range of animals, including humans. PIWI genes are essential for the production of small RNA molecules called piRNAs, which play a role in gene silencing and genome integrity.
